ECafrique places special emphasis on working with the media. We understand that creating a conductive public environment for EC is just as important as building a strong constituency among professionals and policymakers. To ensure fair, informed and objective public debate on EC, we undertake both proactive and reactive media activities. Proactive efforts focus on disseminating correct, up-to-date information on EC and developing the skills of committed journalists through training opportunities such as the 2006 “Journalists to Journalist” workshop.
Despite our best efforts, misinformation and disinformation about post-coital contraception continues in today's media. Our reactive component responds to this need by working with local members and journalists to counter incorrect media reports through letters-to-the –editor and other public responses. We are currently developing a comprehensive “rapid response kit”, including easily-customized responses and country-specific fact sheets, to assist “watchdog” members respond to incorrect media reports in their countries. |
